OK, I am running a 2013 campaign at last, a couple of PCs are converting characters from older editions and one has never played but thinks the setting and system look cool.
So far I have an Army surgeon (probably from an FST or CSH), an MP (probably guarding the medical personel), and an Air Assault trooper who just happens to be around....(still figuring where he fits narratively). Will probably throw in some NPCs to round out skills and be redshirts.....
I'm thinking of making this a CONUS campaign. So I just have to figure out the tactical situation. We have the Russians up north as far as western Canada and maybe NW US. The Chinese spec ops are somehow holding a few towns out west. Canadians are politely invading us from the north. And we invaded Mexico.
One of these hotspots desperately needs resupply and personel. Someone pulled some strings and found them fuel and transport (an old C-123, technically airworthy). They will be on one of the last resupply flights that has to make an emergency/crash landing (basically they all wake up in what's left of the C-123), maybe from mechanical failure or enemy action. This way I can put them just about anywhere. So the question is, what do we do now? And I figure a resupply flight will give them plenty of starting gear to choose from to make up their personal issue. C-123 will be carrying some personel (PCs and NPCs), fuel, meds, ammo, food, and maybe a vehicle.

Any suggestions or thoughts?

Go after those Canadians and kick there butts back north of the border!! LOL

Actually think of all those abandoned Northern city and towns and military bases covered in snow waiting to be discovered.

I'm thinking about sending them up against the Chinese occupation forces out west, maybe helping out a local resistance group drive them out of their town. Suppose the Chinese are content to hold on to towns in mountain passes, natural choke points to operate from and conduct hit and run attacks against local American forces and resistance groups.

OK, so far I think I'll start them off somewhere in Arizona. Maybe near what's left of Phoenix. Then they'll have to figure out what to do, make contact with HQ, help the locals, fight some Chinese. Anyone have any suggestions?

First, they need to secure water. Lots of water. IIRC, temperatures in Arizona get over 110 Fahrenheit.

After that, they will need a temporary base of some sort until they can make contact with the locals. Assuming they are accepted by the locals (with all the crazy stuff going down, trust doesn't go as far as it used to...), maybe have a couple of days of relative peace and quiet then BAM! A raid or some such.

I will probably have them run into some marauders, guys to watched "The Road Warrior" one too many times. Maybe pass through towns razed by the Chinese. As for the Chinese, do you think they'd be using the state-of-the-art gear or be using Chinese clones of our gear to spread confusion and ease their logistics a little? Some of their new gear looks good, but when you're on the other side of the ocean from your homeland, you may want weapons that can use local ammo.

I plan to put them about 10 miles west of Phoenix, near some mountains and some water. Lot's of potential for urban, mountain, and desert combat.

Maybe I'll call it Operation Sand Dragon.
